Does nicotine help against coronavirus?

News! Does nicotine help against corona virus?

In France, health authorities have restricted the sale of nicotine patches because a run on nicotine replacement products started after a study hypothesized that nicotine might protect against Covid-19.

French pharmacies will only sell nicotine patches and other nicotine products until at least May 11 to individual patients – whose names will be registered – for a maximum of one month’s treatment. Online sales were also stopped.

The sale of paracetamol had previously been restricted.

What is the study based on?

The theory of doctors from France stunned: smokers were less affected by the coronavirus than other people and nicotine could even be used as a means to fight the pandemic.

The investigation was carried out by a team at the Pitié Salpêtrière hospital in Paris. 350 in-patient Covid-19 patients and 130 out-patient patients with only mild symptoms took part.

Everyone was asked whether they were smokers. The result: the smoking rate of the infected was only five percent. So significantly below the proportion of smokers in France as a whole: Over 25 percent of the French smoke every day..

Tests planned: can nicotine patches help?

Everything just a coincidence? Not if you believe the figures of the Paris hospital association “Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris” (AP-HP). They come to a similar conclusion. According to AP-HP, only 8.5 percent of the approximately 11,000 patients admitted to French hospitals by the beginning of April were smokers.

The Parisian doctors suspect that nicotine prevents the corona virus from entering the cells and multiplying there. That would mean: nicotine patches could be used as a means of fighting the pandemic – but also preventively for patients who have already contracted the infection.

Does that really work? This is now to be tested in France on three different target groups: clinic staff, Covid 19 patients in the hospital and patients in the intensive care unit.

“Just don’t start smoking”

So if there really is something in the nicotine thesis, it will probably be possible to say in a few weeks at the earliest.

Even Jean-François Delfraissy, president of the scientific council advising the French government on the Corona crisis, believes the theory is likely. At the same time, he warned in an interview with “France Info”: “Don’t start smoking.”

The doctors involved in the study also emphasize this. The dangers of smoking are undisputed – regardless of the pandemic.

Cigarettes cause of death number 1

Smoking to protect yourself against the virus would be absolute nonsense. Especially since Canadian researchers recently came to the conclusion that nicotine for SARS-CoV-2 is nothing more than a brake, but rather a “gateway” to our body, so smokers definitely belong to the risk group.

The figures from Paris should therefore be treated with caution. Another number speaks for itself: 75,000 people die in France every year from the consequences of cigarette consumption. Smoking is and remains the number one cause of death – and much more dangerous than the corona virus.
